- HIRE KIT
Just wanted to say a big thanks to Richard Ainsworth from Chilwell for his Kit Donations to the club.
He donated the following for all members to use:
The starboard Go is a great light wind board in very good condition, and I’ll be testing it this weekend as will some of the people coming to the training course.
There is only a MONTH to go to the watersports event of the year! The NWF will take place on 2-4th June 2017 at Rutland Water.
Online entry is open – and there is even a price reduction on last year, since the infrastructure is already in place at the amazing new venue, Rutland Water.
A weekend at Glastonbury will cost you £243 this year. The NWF is just £70 for a full weekend of non-stop entertainment and watery fun – and includes parking and launch fees, which are normally paid!
If all you want to do is party, tickets are just £25 for both nights, with live bands, spectacular floodlit freestyle displays and an aerial firework display from a glider team who performed for the Queen’s 90th birthday.
Booking tickets is essential. Don’t miss out on the best opportunity to get together with your mates, spend time with your family and join others who share your passion! Get your tickets NOW on www.nationalwatersportsfestival.com

NEW SPONSOR – THE GRAINSTORE; AWARD WINNING LOCAL BEERS
The legendary Friday and Saturday night parties will be managed by The Grainstore, a local brewery who has come onside as a supporting sponsor. You will have the chance to try out award winning permanent and seasonal special ales, such as Red Kite, Rutland Panther and Rutland Beast, as well a range of well-balanced ciders, all made from British apples.
Going up in smoke and down in flames… The NWF Night Events have always been spectacular and 2017 will be no exception.
AeroSparx is coming to the NWF! With their new sponsor, the national outdoor store BLACKS, AeroSparx is the only pyrotechnic glider team in the UK licenced to fly at night. AeroSparx performed a spectacular, aerial firework display on the One Show to honour the Queen on her 90th Birthday and will be performing at the NWF just before dusk on Saturday night. You can get a taste of what is in store at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKLo6l9P3Mg&feature=youtu.be but even that won’t prepare you for the wonder of two gliders carving graceful aerobatics through the night sky, with wingtip pyrotechnics and two fuselages, each covered with 12,000 LED lenses, reflecting from the still, dark surface of Rutland Water!
We have Taster Sessions organised for the weekends of 20th and 21st May and June 17th and 18th. We run morning and afternoon sessions, lasting about 3 hours, for which we charge the princely sum of £10. Bargain!. And if you go on to join the club we will refund your £10, can’t say fairer than that can we? And, as a new member you will be eligible for a free full weekend training course (value £180) that will set you up with the skills necessary to allow you to use our equipment unsupervised.
Your instructor will show you the basics on a simulator and allow each of you to try it for yourself before going out onto the water and having a go on our equipment for approximately an hour. You will then take a break and review your progress and go over those aspects you feel you need to work on again on the simulator. Then back on the water for another spell.
Full details can be found here.
We have today finalised the calendar for the year, lots going on with a big focus on training for beginner and intermediate level sailors, fantastic trips for the experienced and following the huge success in 2016 of the taster sessions and recruiting new beginner members, an increased number of Beginner Training Course weekends.
We have booked Jim Collis for 15th and 16th July and of course theres the National Watersports Festival at Rutland Water on the weekend of June 3rd and 4th. Make sure to put those dates in your diary.
You’ll also note that the AGM seems later this year? Thats because we have put it back a month. We have also moved the membership renewal date to 1st April so all members now get a free extra months membership and third party insurance. We’ve done this to try and retain more of our recruits, people really aren’t thinking about throwing themselves into cold water at the end of February, but the end of March is usually quite a bit warmer. Depending on feedback we might move it by another month next year.
The Club continues to recruit new members, total membership is over 90 in 2016, the highest for years. In order to achieve this we have had fantastic support from our RYA Instructors and this year we will be increasing the number of instructors to help with the expanded training programme. Much or the organisation and management of the club is undertaken by a small number of committee members. We desperately need some help with the running of the club, mostly simple organisational tasks, to spread the workload a little, there is much more we would like to be doing but we do not have the time. If you feel you could help out, please come along to the AGM (more about this to follow, but put the date in your diary) and introduce yourself, we would love to hear from you.
The club will very shortly be arranging another trip to Sotovento, Fuerteventura in June of 2017. Following the hugely successful trips in 2015 and 2016 we think its one of the most reliable and affordable destinations guaranteeing wind. The location offers open sea sailing with little or no shore break and flat water for all those sailors confident in stronger winds. There is also the lagoon for those less confident and for all sailors to practise and rehearse their hot shot moves in waist deep water. This year the tides will be the best we’ve ever had so the lagoon will be the biggest and deepest and all nicely timed for a high tide mid afternoon. Read more ›
Ever since the successful visit to Tiree in 2011 there has been talk of making a return trip and this year we finally made it. Teaming up with four guests from Notts County Sailing Club, eleven of the more adventurous TWC members once again loaded up three vans and a mini-bus and headed north for the Oban ferry.
The format pretty much followed that of the previous trip, with one or two tweaks, having learned a few things from last time. The main change was to wait till later in the year in the hope of having better winds. However, as things turned out, be careful what you wish for! We set off with a forecast littered with extreme winds, causing some of us enough concern to leave our bigger sails behind. It also turned out that our fears were shared by the ferry operator too! We set off on a Tuesday night, planning to return the following Monday morning, so again having five full days on the island. So far this was pretty much a repeat performance of last time although we did make the journey slightly quicker by having an upgrade on the mini-bus. In addition to not having a 60mph limiter, this baby came with heated seats and Bluetooth which allowed the drivers to sync their music collections. In hindsight, Gorillaz D- sides was possibly not to everyone’s taste. Read more ›
Dear NWF Community,
Well, the 10th Anniversary on NWF on Hayling was an epic one and I hope you all had a fantastic time. The wind arrived for our 10th Anniversary wind which was brilliant for our windsurfers, albeit a little testing for our SUP community!
After 10 wonderful years, I am now closing the curtain on the NWF at Hayling Island, and preparing to start a brand new chapter of NWF. It has been a great decade at Hayling, and we really ended our 10th anniversary on a high. Looking forward, the watersports industry has changed, and we must change too.
Whilst Hayling is a fantastic venue to windsurf and sup recreationally, it presents us with an every increasing list of challenges especially when managing our NWF land footprint. Increasing legislation presents organising an event on this scale now almost impossible.
So I am proud to announce that the NWF 2017 will take place at Rutland Water on the 3rd and 4th of June.
I am excited by the new chapter of the NWF at Rutland and I’m thrilled to hear that many people have already pledged their support to the new chapter of NWF. The watersports industry have already given their full support to the concept and were in agreement with the website poll results which were to move the event to June ready for the summer season. The Rutland venue is less intimidating for some of the recreational windsurfers and paddlers, plus an excellent playground for youth development and tasters, something that I am keen to develop further in the new model and grow our NWF community even further.
My primary aims for this new chapter are:
There are some very successful European windsurfing and sup events which are hosted at freshwater venues.
Rutland Water has a plethora of reasons to be the host of NWF in the future. It offers:
– it is the second largest reservoir in Europe.
– onsite watersports facilities including on water safety
– a central UK location enabling NWF to be more accessible
– an inland location which will be safe and accessible for both windsurfers and SUP at any level and ability
– onsite camping for 6000 people
– private land without council restrictions
– additional family friendly activities including an aqua park, zoo, cycle trails, climbing facilities
– room to expand and develop the NWF model
It just leaves me now to thank you for your continued support over the last 10 years and welcome you to our new exciting chapter of NWF, so please put it in your diary – 3rd and 4th June 2017.
Have you been on or windsurfing holiday and are looking for a club back home to continue in the sport? Or has the Olympics inspired you to get back into Windsurfing?
We are now offering reduced membership fees for a half-year membership running to the end of February 2017. The following membership fees apply:
Individual Membership = £75
Family Membership = £90
This fee includes your insurance and use of the club kit. It does not apply to those attending a Beginner Training course which is only included for those paying full membership fees. This is still considerably cheaper than similar course at places like Carsington & Rutland.
